What is Bauernherbst?
The 5th season in SalzburgerLand begins in mid-August - the farmers' autumn. It is the time to bring in and process the harvest, the time of festivals, encounters and enjoyment. Here you have the opportunity to get to know traditional rural life at craft demonstrations, hikes, cooking courses, harvest festivals, alpine pasture drives and traditional events. Music, dance, good food, traditional costumes, club life and handicrafts take centre stage.
After the summer in the alpine pastures, the alpine dairymen return to the valley with their cattle. The farmers take to the fields one last time before winter to bring in hay and harvest fruit, grain or vegetables. Now is the time to process the harvest. Jams are boiled down, juices are pressed, fruit is mashed for distilling schnapps or bacon and sausages are smoked. The farmers also take all these freshly produced products to the numerous farmers' autumn markets, where they can be tasted and bought at the stalls. But after the busy summer, Bauernherbst is also an opportunity for a sociable "Hoagascht" (sitting together), dancing in the hayloft at the farm festivals, enjoying culinary delights and wearing the festive costumes.
The tourism association BRUCK FUSCH | GROSSGLOCKNER, together with the farming community and the Bruck Agricultural College, is once again organising a fitting festival this year. Visitors can enjoy a regional farmers' market, traditional live music, lots of customs and culinary delights. For the little visitors there is a colourful children's programme, such as painting, handicrafts and face painting. Young and old are also welcome to take a ride on the slow train.
